"The power of now"
Eckhart’s Tolle book “The power of now” acted as a catalyst for my deep personal change, in order to escape from the fear induced to my life that I live in separation from my true self and being enslaved to pain and conflict. When I finished reading this book I found myself one step closer to my transformation.
Eckhart’s Tolle message is simple: “All negativity is caused by an accumulation of psychological time and denial of the present. Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry - all forms of fear - are caused by too much future, and not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of non-forgiveness are caused by too much past and not enough presence”.
According to Tolle our problems derive from the fact that we live through memory and expectation, away from the present moment. Our thoughts, the ongoing incessant mental noise, are the reason of our misery. When we focus all our attention on a future point we stop living in the present and we even perceive it as an obstacle.
More often than not we identify with negativity and we ignore, deny or sabotage the positive in our life. We find ourselves in a constant state of complaining and we adopt the role of the victim. We offer our strength to others because we don’t have faith in us. We are always “not good enough, not smart enough, not strong enough, not worthy enough, not pretty enough, not desirable enough…..”
What can we do?
Look around you. Just look and observe, don’t interpret. Touch, feel and recognize, the shapes, the colors and the silent presence of everything, without judgement. Be mindful of your thoughts, feelings, desires, intentions and actions, be mindful every moment of your day. Find the source of abundance within you.
Our mind is like the surface of the ocean, is never still. There are always waves, no matter how small, created by the winds of life, difficulties, obstacles, losses. The presence is like a surf board which allows us to flow with the wind and be one with the waves.
We should observe our external roadblocks and misfortunes as well as our internal reactions, such us thoughts and feelings, without trying to avoid them or judge them. We should observe our body because is connected to our brain and emotions and it can be the indicator of our wellbeing. We can use our breath as an anchor and honor the present moment. We can became the witness observing not only what is happening inside and out of us but also be aware of the observer. We should challenge our beliefs and our perspectives. We should quit resisting and accept, embrace and surrender to the now.
Through the now we can move to the level of purpose and then we will find ourselves to the level of possibility and change. The quality of our life depends on us. We are the creator and director of our play (life).
As Tolle says: “Space and silence are two aspects of the same thing. The same no-thing. They are externalization of inner space and inner silence, which is stillness: the infinitely creative womb of all existence.” In this stillness we are at the deep level of being, we are one with all that is.
And he continues: “Your outer journey may contain a million steps; your inner journey only has one: the step you are taking right now”.
